LHWA Members,
Long term consumption of drinking water with lead and copper above the EPA action level is considered unhealthy. As discussed at the January 2026 Annual Meeting, the Environmental Protection Agency required that all Public Water Systems, including LHWA, assess their water systems for lead and copper components and conduct periodic sampling of the water.
LHWA completed this assessment by August 2024. The assessment included a determination of system materials from the wells, through the plant and distribution system, to the meter serving each home. Additionally, a determination of piping material was done for all homes built prior to 1989 (lead and copper was no longer allowed in home building material after this time). The results of the assessment were: (1) there are no lead and copper components in our system from the wells through the meters; (2) there are no lead or copper pipes leaving the meter to the 110-homes built after 1989.
LHWA was required to sample 10 homes for lead and copper during the period June-September 2025. The samples were done in November 2025, missing the deadline. LHWA is required to notify the members that this sampling deadline was missed. Analysis of the samples showed that none of the 10 homes had lead or copper above the EPA action level in their drinking water.
Any members with concerns about lead and copper are encouraged to contact the LHWA Operations Manager, Tim King at (407) 575-8659.
